Our team has experienced difficulties with technical issues, lack of focus, communication problems and loneliness during online learning. It’s very hard to connect with your classmates through Zoom or Teams. We have also noticed that the quality of education can suffer as teachers don’t put so much effort into online classes.

The difficulties: They have been quite a big thing specially during the pandemic time. We had discussed a lot about the subject and it brought many memories and things that we either liked or didnt. Pandemic time has changed a bit how we are learning and thinking how we should learn and study.

The number one is just being by yourself and going school only from Teams or Zoom platforms. The online teaching creates loneliness and lack of social interaction and we all agreed on that. Not getting the support right away from your friends like in real class makes lose more of your focus towards studies and its becoming more stressful and less interesting.

The good practises: Thinking about the total online teaching, our team thinks that keeping contact with your friends, asking them how are they feeling and meeting regularly helps getting through the total online teaching and getting more motivation so you are not just at home by yourself. Also thinking afterwards and how we think, is that the combination between both learning types are good depending what kind of classes are we speaking about. Doing teamwork is best done in face to face environment because thats how the best results are made. Then speaking about online teaching the best way to arrange that is in lectures with no actual hard working or groupwork. The good practises includes doing the homework together in Teams or Zoom so you could see and meet your friends even if its not possible to see them like it was in some cases and times during pandemic. The online teaching taught us important things about several platforms for online teaching like Zoom, Teams, Google meetings, Canva, Padlet and many more. Those digital skills make us even more adaptable to changing situations and keeping us more prepared to the future and keeping our digital skills in a good level.

  • The lack of visual connection. In my experiences I felt that my group and me, we were sth slowly working on some tasks as no one of us was following fully. Also when coming up with new ideas the problem of not being able to draw it or to face it and just to explain it - made it really hard. What we now do is using screensharing on zoom or the whiteboard version, which helps us all to have a better understanding.

  • Lack of required engagement during classes. In my experience during some classes when there was not much engagement offered to the students, I found myself distracted with other things and ultimately didn’t learn much if at all. I think how this could be avoided is by having the teachers come up with some engagement for the students such as group discussions in breakout rooms or other tasks to keep everyone’s attention to the class. Some classes did this and I found them to be much more interesting.

  • Lack of discipline. From my point of view, learning online is quite boring: I always used to complain about the lack of motivation due to the recurring technical and bandwidth problems, as well as the monotonous lectures. Even professors frequently complained about the lack of resources for engaging the students, which results in a loss of interest on both sides. Also, the fact that you could easily use the laptop or mobile phone for personal interests (not concerning the lecture) brought numerous distractions (less focused). If the technical problems are independent from us, the lack of motivation can be improved by using gamification tools such as Kahoot or interactive blackboards.

Difficulties during online learning:
- unstable Internet connection: It's really inconvenient when the Internet stops working during a test or exam, or even just a group discussion.
- lack of interaction and concentration during lectures
- mental health: A whole day of sitting in front of the computer in silence is not beneficial for our mental health as we need some exercise and human interactions.

Good practices developed to overcome this difficulty:
- Personally: develop a healthy routine such as sleeping for enough 8 hours, eating 3 meals a week, exercise or at least going out for a walk, meeting friends, etc
- Choose the best tools for you during online classes: tools to document or take notes, tools to record the lessions, etc. Therefore you can review the lesson again afterwards
- Online group study after class: when you study with others, it encourages you to focus more and be more productive.

During the first year of our studies, we had a period where we were strictly online due to high Covid cases in our city. This was after having already completed a semester using a hybrid model. It was evident that when everything was shifted online, the dynamics of the lessons and how the students communicated was significantly affected. Aside from the small inconveniences like technical issues, one of the most significant difficulties was feeling disconnected from the topic, which can lead to lack of motivation and participation. This can then negatively impact your learning and learning habits as you may be comfortable in not having to face responsibilites in person.

Some good practicies that were developed to help overcome this difficulty were to develop a close group of peers with whom you could rely on to keep you engaged. As well as allowing yourself enough time to thoroughly go over any course material outside of the lecture period so that you may ask any questions to the professor. If not already established early on, creating a team in which you can distribute the responsibility is also beneficial. Having a strong sense of control over your study schedule, that is to say committing to study time, is also beneficial for positive outcomes in online learning.

The Corona Virus pandemic has transformed many aspects of life and has forced many colleges and students to move to virtual normal distance learning. Even though there are many advantages in online education (immense flexibility for students, reduced costs , more free time) , we can not avoid the difficulties that appeared at the same time with the good things. At first let’s talk about technical issues. Unfortunately, they are bound to happen in an online-only environment and they only add to the online environment’s frustration and interrupt new distance learning sessions. Sometimes your computer will shut down, or there are moments when your wifi is not that good, and weak monitors can make it challenging to keep up with your virtual classmates and learning environment. In our opinion the solution to this problem is based on research. Before enrolling in online degree programs, college students should research two aspects. These are: whether they have access to the relevant technology at home to study and whether the school offers enough technical support and access to technical help through faculty or academic staff. And also it’s good to communicate with your teacher, announce him about your technical problem. You are not the only one with this problem. Second of all, let’s talk about distraction and being able to stay focused. Having a time management system is perhaps the most difficult challenge for students to overcome because it depends entirely on self-motivation. Students need to be serious about their education, learn how to manage time, set their daily schedule, and study despite constant distractions. Smartphones which have made our lives so much easier and yet more distracting are the main reason when it comes to distraction. The constant notifications from a wide variety of platforms can really pull students away from lessons and assignments. And once a mind is distracted by these notifications, getting sucked into the rabbit hole that is the Internet is inevitable. We think the main solution is based on managing time. You need to be organised, set your goals and follow them and also pick a quiet time and place to complete your coursework .

With the spreading of the covid-19 pandemic, the educational system has been through major changes in order to make online learning as similar as on-site learning.

The first disatvantage of online learning would be that there is a high risk of connection related issues. If you don’t have an internet connection, you can’t attend your online classes. In this case, a way to overcome this problem would be to invest in a better data or wi-fi plan or to get a better router.

A second disatvantage of e-learning is that you don’t get to socialize much. It was especially hard for us during the forst year of university to get to know eachother and to form bonds because we never met in person. One way we overcame this was by organizing gatherings, where our classmates were invited. We usually met up at a cafe and we got to know eachother well.

Firstly, it was more difficult to receive direct feedback from the teacher regarding the subject and more difficult to ask questions, so the misunderstanding rate grew, and the motivation to learn was low too. To combat this, more teachers started to switch to interactive lessons and assignments, rather than the classic ones, to keep the students on pace. Also, with the inevitable evolution of the e-learning system, we could message and talk privately with the teacher in order to sort out our thoughts on the specific subject.

Second of all, it was a big problem with the evaluation process. Because of the online system, fraud increased among students, and it was difficult for teachers to see the actual studying level of the students. The combat solution was some fraud-free exam websites, which offered the teacher the possibility to better monitor the students.

We started the first year of college online. We had done online classes in high school, but now it was a completely different situation. We didn't know our classmates or teachers, and for those with a very active life and a sociable nature, this period was a hard test. Among the negative parts we encountered was the difficulty in assimilating any type of information. Being people used to reading books in physical format, we were not able to retain information from the materials made available on the faculty's platform. Therefore, some of the solutions we approached were either to print out our courses or to make sketches on sheets.

Another negative part was the lack of motivation. If you're a self-taught person, this period most likely felt like torture. We face daily the lack of motivation to get out of bed, change out of our pajamas and sit down at the desk and the lack of motivation to try to concentrate. The best solution for this problem was to wake up earlier to do our morning routine and create a learning environment similar to the one at school (we replaced sitting in bed with sitting at the desk and putting the phone in - a place far away from us).

Online learning is tough because sometimes the internet doesn't work well, and we have to use different websites and tools for classes. It's like trying to learn in a bumpy car ride! Also, when we have questions, we can't always get answers right away like we could in a regular classroom. That can make learning harder.
